First Days

Yay first blog post! For my May project I am volunteering at the St. Louis Crisis Nursery, which is an organization that provides a place for families to bring their kids for up to two days if they cannot take care of their children due to violence, health or living situation issues, etc.The Crisis Nursery has multiple locations, each which can accommodate about 10-12 kids ages 0-12. The locations are usually houses that have been converted to provide offices, a play area, a kitchen and bedrooms.
Last week I volunteered in between my two AP classes and this week I'm going in the morings before my bio class. I absolutely love volunteering here! Each day there are about 6 volunteer/staff members, most of which are the same each day, so I know the people I'm working with pretty well.
Last week was very hectic. The nursery was at capacity and I was dealing with entertaining, feeding and cleaning up after a lot of toddlers. Today was much easier; there were only 2 babies. The kids who come in are adorable and so much fun to play with (especially the babies!). Although some of the kids are going through difficult situations, they rarely show it. Most of the time they are happy and energetic!
Unfortunately, I still hear sad comments from some of the kids. While we were watching a Winnie the poo movie, the oldest boy (of 3 brothers), who was about 7, told me that they have the "three brothers stick together" rule, which means they always stay together and support each no matter what. It was so sweet that he took care of his siblings, but also sad that he had to have responsibility for his brothers.
I wish I could share pictures of these adorable kids!! But due to confidentiality reasons I can't take or share pictures :(. But I love seeing everyone else's!!
